Spiegeloog 441: Memory

Spiegeloog 441: ‘Memory’ – Editorial

By Barnaba Oretti and Jules KotowiczNovember 24, 2025No Comments

Dear Readers,

We are our experiences. The things we remember, the things we forget, the things we wish we could remember, and the things we wish we could forget transform us piece by piece into who we and others see ourselves as. What slips through the cracks and why? What seemingly minor moment lingers far longer than it ought to? Spiegeloog 441: Memory, our latest issue, discusses these topics and more, and we hope you enjoy reading it.

Cover by Jules Kotowicz

‘Nostos’, our chosen Words to Start poem by Louise Glück, kicks off the issue, after which Varsha doesn’t skip a beat and gets right into the weeds of generational trauma: how and why it happens, and what can be done to break the cycle.

Marie lifts the curtain on the not-so-blissful ignorance that we feel after alcohol-induced blackouts, after which Laura’s Camera Obscura discusses Severance and the same kind of naïveté in which its characters operate.

Clara then draws from her personal experiences with grief to shed light on the way losing those we love affects our brain, and Nicole paints a picture of the diverse landscape of trauma treatment. After Arya’s Crescendo, a 22-year retrospective on Death Cab for Cutie’s album Transatlanticism, Sandra dives even deeper into one of these treatments in particular: EMDR. Finally, Jules closes out this issue with a personal—and final—piece of ‘Memory’, Bacchus.

We hope this issue is one to remember!
