Spiegeloog 429: ‘Explore’

By November 13, 2023February 13th, 2024No Comments

Dear readers,

To explore is to experience new things, expand your horizon, and remain curious about the unknown. It can mean both discovering new things, or uncovering things you didn’t already know about yourself. For this issue – 429: Explore, our editors tackle topics ranging from intellectual curiosity to ‘generation gap year’.

Cover by Sarah Laszlo

Anika kicks off our issue by considering the degree to which our degrees actually influence our motivation to learn, while Viktor highlights the central role that hope plays during journeys that can strain both the body and mind. Vadim gets into the nitty gritty of what happens when we are pulled away from each other, and why it can feel so tough. Aki explores how our views on traveling and the elusive gap year have shifted to become somewhat of a status symbol. And when it comes to making decisions, Shriya tugs at the dilemma of trying out new things vs. sticking to the familiar. When does it make sense to explore other options?

As for our columns: Christine reviews the heart-stopping documentary film The Deepest Breath, displaying the devotion to an extreme sport that pushes both your physical and mental boundaries. How do you know if you’re on the right path? Evita talks to faculty members for whom psychology is/was not always the focus, and Anushka’s interviews students for The Corridor about their experiences taking on an optional course profile or an interesting combination of programs. With the year in full swing, our editors decided to share their favorite spots in Amsterdam. For Art Affairs, the Spiegeloog editorial board will also visit the Amsterdam Light Festival to explore the theme of Technology and AI. Last but not least, the Bacchus: ‘After hearing my response, the boy next to me jokingly said “You’re not going to start crying if I ask where home is for you, right?”’ – Avanti writes a heartfelt piece exploring the different ways in which we shape our identity.
