VSPA Showcase 2023

By April 4, 2023January 23rd, 2024No Comments

Recently, on the 14th of March, the VSPA hosted their annual showcase event, highlighting the many artistic abilities the psychology student has to offer, ranging from inspired creative artists to blindfolded musicians who leave you dumbfounded.

The committee consisting of the VSPA’s very own chair, Katie Yao Morgan, who holds this event near and dear to her heart, alongside the committee chair, Greta, secretary, Sophie, head of promotions, Elena, and treasurer, Matheus, put together a buzzing event at the Mezrab cultural center to shine the spotlight on some familiar faces you’ve probably seen around the halls of UvA. Despite the consistent meetings, the committee definitely had fun putting together a successful event for you all, taking breathers while they watched humorous (and maybe slightly bizarre) videos, breaking the ice and bonding beyond the event planning. If you wanna take a look at their favorite one, you can do so here

Through audience deliberation following the gallery exhibition and all the performances, the following people were picked as winners (with short descriptions of their work in case you missed it!) for the 2023 VSPA Showcase:

1st place for artworks goes to All That There Is – Fragile by Daria

When the ground below your feet feels like a fluid concept. When reality constantly changes around you. When you question the very material of your core, all your values, all your wrongs. Stillness is to be found in the heat of the dance.

When the sun shines from unexpected corners and you see all that there is. Fragile, tender –the unity of life covers your heart in a new light. Ground yourself in the present and let your soul dream free.

This artwork combines words and symbols in a visual map of a new found hope.An invitation to define the pillars of your own faith, a love letter to vulnerability.

Where do you throw the anchor when you’re sailing through the sky?

2nd place for artworks goes to Surrender by Anna

A few individuals would describe the period that we are living in today as an evolution; perhaps not an industrial one like in the past, but a spiritual one.

Spiritual practices are teaching us that there is a true self, an energy that inhabits all living beings. This way we are closely connected to all living beings, be it humans, plants, or animals.

This true self is supposedly enabling us to see the real world and things for what they really are, without being disrupted by our never-resting ego and mind. The true self enables us to see the world’s true colours and was the inspiration for this painting.

Lots of texts describe spiritual enlightenment as an opening of a third eye, which is depicted in this piece seeing all the colours there are. However, the self-portrait I decided to keep in shades of grey to represent the constrictions that our mind can have on us, obstructing to see all the true colours.

1st place for the musical performances goes to 3 Original Songs performed by Tim and David, Saying Goodbye Forever, That’s What Makes You You, and What Was it Like.

2nd place to Katie’s blindfolded piano performance.

Finally, 3rd place goes to Daan (ft. Greta & Elisa) with a mixed performance featuring original pieces and covers, Library, Don’t Know Why, Wicked Game, and In My Heart.
