Spiegeloog 425: ‘Vision’

By March 20, 2023February 13th, 2024No Comments

Dear readers,

Psychology is a young discipline, but with a rich history. As the world changes and grows in complexity, what can we expect? And what about how we perceive ourselves and our surroundings? For ‘Vision’, we happily welcome our new editors Shriya and Hanna.

We begin our issue with Words to Start by Laura, who collaborated with ChatGPT, to write a poem inspired by a bizarre interaction on a gloomy Amsterdam day. Evita follows this by reviewing the multi-award winning film Aftersun for Camera Obscura. We’d like to congratulate the winners of this year’s VSPA Showcase, check out their artwork and performances! Aki presents us with a utopian view of urban living through the landscape of Singapore. Shriya gives us an insight into NeuroVision and the future of AI in marketing. Switching gears, Avanti demarcates various aspects of body dysmorphia from general dissatisfaction with one’s body. For the Art Affairs column, Evita pays a visit to the UFO – Unidentified Fluid Other exhibition at NXT Museum. Aline explores the popular concept of manifestation, tying it into psychological theories, while Sara and Áron celebrate neurodiversity by highlighting the positive influence ADHD can have on creativity.

Turning our gaze back to visions for the future, Tan discusses Elon Musk’s company Neuralink and what neural implants can do for healthy individuals. Nita and Alessia from SIOS (the Student Initiative for Open Science) contribute to this issue questioning the necessity of university rankings. Ella ponders how we construct reality – are we all part of a collective hallucination? Jules illustrates how, when it comes to gender development, gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia are two sides of the same coin. Hanna introduces us to Neil Harribson, an influential human cyborg of our time.

Nitya (SIOS) writes about the importance of computational reproducibility. Anushka reviews Ursula K Le Guin’s sci-fi short story collection ‘Changing Planes’, while expert Henk Jan Conradie gives his take on couples’ therapy. Ayla questions whether the dynamic and booming field of neuroscience can crack the puzzle of existence, or if it has come to a standstill. Nike considers the accessibility of digital apps for neurodivergent people in Let’s Mingle.

Laura contemplates the act of ‘calmly’ protesting against climate change, and Anushka details the benefits of having imaginary companions for vulnerable children. Evita rounds off the articles with a piece on psychedelics and their hallucinatory effects. Finally, Vadim presents us with an optimistic Bacchus on why maybe the grass is in fact greener on our side, or at least why we should view it as such.

Enjoy the new issue!
